About the Memorial
World Colonization Memorial (WCM) is a forthcoming international shrine for pilgrimage and remembrance, where communities impacted by colonization can reflect on the brutal violence that has shaped their lives, pay tribute to the victims, and pursue healing. Although colonization remains a dark period in our past that most people would rather forget, the physical consequences cast a shadow across the world, compromising our commitment to a more inclusive society.
regardless of color, nationality, religion, gender identity, age, belief or other status
WCM comprises:
A commemoration site for
(i) – Colonized peoples of the Americas, Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Europe, and the Caribbean (not exclusively), who were extra-judicially massacred for defying and challenging colonial rule and its associated systems.
(ii) – Prominent pro-independence leaders from around the world who were assassinated for leading anti-colonial movements that sought to reclaim sovereignty from colonial powers.
WCM is also a CALL to reverse cultures of denial and foster faster action, greater collaboration, and deeper determination TOWARD a world free from colonization.
Besides calling the International Community to acknowledgment and repentance, WCM seeks to accelerate the pace of the United Nations action towards transformative change for racial justice.
It will be the only place where nations of the world can gather to lay wreaths for victims of colonization, atone for the atrocities of a bygone era, mend eroded trust, and appropriately address an overdue reckoning for the benefit of all.
A global champion for voices that can not be heard - world colonization memorial is an affirmation of our common humanity
This bold action is Confronting the legacies of past injustices, including accountability and redress
For the enslaved, for the hanged and beaten, for the shot, drowned, and burned, for the tortured, massacred, and terrorized, for those abandoned by the rule of law – WCM will illuminate the most comprehensive spirit of colonization truths imaginable.
Our Impartial Approach
To maintain a neutral and impartial approach to our work, WCM does not support any religious or political model of government or ideology. The impartiality that resides at the heart of the integrity of the United Nations Charter is the cornerstone of WCM's moral authority.
In its quest for the truth as the world's first and only tribute of remembrance to honor millions of people killed across the globe during the horrific chapter of colonization, WCM is non-partisan, impartial, but not neutral.
For centuries, access to “the ugly parts” of our history was severely limited by the lack of genealogical records of victims and their descendants. A team of dedicated researchers and genealogists is seeking to change that. WCM is liaising with countries that were colonized and recovering the names of millions of men, women, and children killed during the dark period of colonization.
WCM is creating a searchable database of the hidden story of colonization, identifying the names of the giants of history and restoring their dignity.
A sober place of pilgrimage and remembrance for victims of enslavement and colonization throughout the world, World Colonization Memorial is the first genuine step toward reconciliation, racial healing, and a more inclusive society.
